11 Things to do in Sattal – Around Twenty-Two km from Nainital, Sattal is famous for its seven freshwater lakes which is a paradise for Photographers. The seven lakes of Sattal are Purna Tal, Ram Tal, Sita Tal, Laxman Tal, Nal Damyanti Tal, Sukha Tal and Garud Tal situated at about 4000 feet.

The lakes offer you a Calm and quite ambience, spectacular panoramic views and sweet chirp of the beautiful birds. Sattal is still an untouched place which is the ultimate destination for enjoying birding, camping, and wildlife sighting. Sattal is home to tall pine and oak trees, mesmerizing landscape and wandering birds.

The beautiful lakes are the ideal spots to witness a lot of butterflies and thousands of species of moths, bugs, beetles, and other insects. Nowadays, you can enjoy water sports in one of the lakes in Sat Tal such as rowing, paddling and kayaking.

Situated on 1370 metres, Sattal is unique for its biodiversity and ecological balance. Sat Tal gives habitation to 150 species of resident and migratory birds, 20 species of mammals, over 525 species of butterflies and over 11,000 species of moths, beetles, bugs and other insects. There’s a popular legend regarding the origins of the Sat Tal. It’s believed that once a king named Nala drowned in the water of one of the seven lakes of Sat Tal with his wife Damayanti, during his fourteen years long exile given by his brother. So, the lake called Nal Damyanti Tal.

 Another four lakes named after the lead characters of Ramayana i.e. Ram Tal, Purna Tal, Laxman Tal, Sita Tal. The last remaining two lakes are named after the phoenix-like creature that carries the chariot of Lord Vishnu i.e.  Sukha Tal and Garud Tal.

Best Time for Sattal Birding

 October to June is the best time for Sattal birding. During winters, upper Himalayan birds migrate to Sattal temporarily. So, if you are interested and can brave the chill, go for it.

Sattal Weather

The Best time to visit Sattal is between March to June and September to November. Although, Sat Tal can be visited any time of the year.

The weather during summer is fascinating and pleasant. In Sattal, April to June are months of summer which offers you a very delightful and warm climate within a temperature range of 10°C to 27°C.

 The months of July and August are the season of monsoon, so Sattal is rainy during these months. You can seek the lush green landscapes of Sat Tal during monsoon months. Sat Tal is at its picturesque best during monsoon months.

During months of December to February, the climate is very severe and the temperature drops down up to 2°C and winters are accompanied by heavy snowfalls. We highly recommend you to carry heavy woollens clothes if you are planning a visit to Sat Tal during winters.

Seven Lakes

 As name justifies, Sat Tal is a fascinating cluster of seven interconnected lakes situated on the height of 1370 m. The sources of water for these lakes are underground springs which are named behind legends and the Hindu mythological characters. The names of these lakes are: Ram Tal, Lakshman Tal, Sita Tal, Nal Damyanti Tal, Panna Tal, Purna Tal and Sukha Tal.

Butterfly Museum

In the John Estate located on the Hidimba Parvat, Butterfly Farm is a museum at John estate that will make you feel near to nature. A Czech father and his son, conserving rare and endangered species of Himalayan moths and butterflies.

 Housing about 110 species of insect and over 2500 varied species of butterflies, the conservatory is must be visiting place for nature lovers and avid photographers.


As the town of seven lakes, fishing is a very popular activity in Sattal.


 You can enjoy Kayaking in the lakes, amidst with lush green and dense forest. However, not all of the lakes are accessible by boat. You need to trek part of the way to reach these.

 If you are lucky, then you will spot the flutter of the Mahseer just under the water’s surface or the Kingfisher diving for its quarry.

Methodist Ashram

 Founded in the1930 by Stanley Jones, Methodist Ashram is a place that displays the historic significance of the town as well as the colonial architectural wonder. The Ashram is set amid of Oaks and pines on the bank of the Jade green Garur Tal.

The Ashram marks the entry point of banks of beautiful Sat Tal. St. Johns Church is situated in the premises of the Ashram which gives this place a feel of solitude and serenity. Primarily a silent Retreat, the Ashram has dormitories for guests. To get to Garur Tal follow a curving wooden trial from the main lakes area. It’s a lovely walk through thick dense forest.

Nainital is a popular hill station situated at a distance of 26 km from Sat Tal. It serves as an epicentre of various tourist destinations and panoramic views which attracts thousands of visitors around the year.  As known by Town of seven lakes, Boating is very popular and delightful activity in Sat Tal.

After boating, you can grab a chair in one of the many stalls beside the lake and have Kumaon’s signature sickly-sweet Garam Chai with Pakoras as you take in the view.
