Kausani – Kausani is one of the most beautiful tourist destinations of Kumaon. Endowed with supreme natural splendour, it is a small town. Surrounded with verdant valleys and dense pine forests, Kausani offers magnificent views of the Himalayan range.
This 350 kilometer Himalayan stretch seen from Kausani evokes magical and grandiose sentiments providing glimpses of the imperial peaks of Nanda Devi, Trishul, Panchachuli and Nanda Kot among others.
Kausani was made famous internationally by Mahatma Gandhi after he visited it in 1929 during one of his long journeys. After staying here for a fortnight, he was so impressed with its natural grandeur that he referred to it as The Switzerland of India in his Young India.
Mahatma Gandhi reached Kausani on June 19, 1929, and was extremely overwhelmed by the tranquil exquisiteness of the Kausani. He confessed that though he had seen places like Darjeeling and Shimla, it was only after he arrived at Kausani that he realized the enormity of the Himalayas. This is what he wrote in the newspaper ‘Navjiwan’ – “I thought of the thoughts which would occur in the mind of a person from a different mental background after feeling the greatness of Himalayan peaks, bright and full of snow.”

Altitude from sea level – 1980 m During this famous stay in Kausani, Mahatma Gandhi wrote his book titled ‘Anasakti Yoga’. This book is based upon his understanding of the Bhagwat Gita. An ashram commemorating this event was established in the guesthouse where Gandhi had stayed. The bungalow was originally owned by the owner of a local tea estate and later became the official guesthouse of the Zila Panchayat. The then Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Sucheta Kriplani handed over the building to the Uttar Pradesh Gandhi Memorial Trust with the assistance of which this historic ashram came into existence and was aptly named the Anasakti Ashram. The ashram houses an extensive library and remains open to the visitors throughout the year.
The trails and paths around Kausani and neighbouring villages provide ideal walks where one could go on and on in the company of the mammoth Himalayas. A small bustling marketplace and several attractive hotels and lodges make Kausani an ideal tourist destinations.
