Kedarnath Tour | Haridwar to Kedarnath | Hotels in Kedarnath- one of the twelve ” Jyotirlingas”, Kedarnath Dham is located in dramatic mountainscapes of the majestic Kedarnath range.

At an altitude of 3584 mts. and on the head of river Mandakani, the shrine of Kedarnath is amongst the holiest pilgrimages for the Hindus.

There are more than 200 shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, however the most important one being Kedarnath which is very close to the Indo-Chinese border.

The region is extremely cold in the winters, so it is covered with snow around all over the year. In the summers, the mercury merely crosses the 20 degree Celsius. You can visit Kedarnath dham is between May and October. 

As per the tradition decided by Lord Brahma, the Kedarnth Mandir would be open for six months from month Vaishaka to Kartik in Hindu calendar for darshan. For the remaining six months, the kedarnth temple would be closed for darshan. During the winters, the shrine is submerged in snow and hence is closed.

 The Legend of Kedarnath Dham

According to a popular legend, the Mahabharata heroes, the Pandavas after having won over the Kauravas in the great Mahabharata war, felt guilty of having killed their own brothers and sought the blessings of Lord Shiva for redemption. 

He eluded them repeatedly and while fleeing took refuge at Kedarnath dham in the form of a bull. Bhima, one of the Pandava brothers, found Shiva amongst a herd of cattle.

In Kedarnath dham, there is only rear end of the bull remained and the rest of its body parts scattered across the Garhwal. Lord Shiva dived into the ground leaving behind him a hump on the surface which is worshipped as the idol. It is one of the temple of Panch Kedar yatra. 

The remaining body parts of Lord Shiva appeared at four other sites and are worshipped there as his manifestations. The arms become visible at Tungnath, the face appeared at Rudranath, the belly at Madmaheshwar temple while his locks (hair) with head at Kalpeshwar temple.
